View Full Version : Youth policy - a criminal waste

Now is the time to start planning.
What is our youth policy? Does anyone know - what does Stix do? Is it down to him? I do not know!
A city the size of Bradford and the surrounding areas (must be 3-4 million) must have undiscovered talent. Jim Jefferies said the same thing at a fans forum years ago.
But we just go for one quick fix solution after another and it just does not work. When we were in the Premiership was the right time to get it started, but there was too much cash lying around and it got wasted. OK that might be hindsight, but we still do nothing, seasons after seasons go by and we still do not learn our lesson. It such a glaringly obvious oversight. Long term we would get commitment and save money, and everyone agrees, but still nothing gets done.
I do not have much time for Colbeck or Joe Brown, but there they are, are they there on the fringe by accident, against all the odds, is this all that we have managed to discover? We have to make serious efforts with schools and local teams - are we too good/arrogant to be dealing with these people. Until this is sorted we will just carry on being a nowhere club. Our reserves get stuffed week in week out - its too depressing to go on.
As for yesterday - it started going wrong when Wethers dropped Ainge after one bad game at Rotherham, we've never looked the same since those opening games after Todd left. Daley should be shot for letting that ball go. Why didn't Muirhead play, what about the French bloke, what happened at half-time?
There I've said it/got it off my chest!

And another thing - what happened to the fans forums, we get to know nothing about what is going on, at least GR got that right, its alright excusing JR as a shy man - but he has a responsibility to us - its all our club not just his - we'll still be suffering (as I'm sure he will) for all of the years to come, not to mention the years previuosly suffered (supporter since 11 - that's 40 years ago!).

For the last 5 years I think all effort has been on what has been needed to keep the club in existence, and long term planning has very much taking a back seat to short term needs. We have been reactive rather than proactive, and I don't see that changing much whilst our financial situation remains precarious.

As regards fans forums, I think Julian Rhodes would rather be tarred and feathered and put in the stocks than actually face the fans. We were somewhat spoilt in that regard by having GR, who was a born showman and if nothing else could hold a crowd.

I'm not sure if other clubs typically have fans forums for their chairman. Could be that he is following the norm and that our experience with GR was the exception.

Next season we will have Lukey O'Brien playing at left back, Simbo Ainge battling for a starting spot, McGuire, Colbeck, Bentham and Brown all in contention. What happens to Penford and Swift I do not know but I would imagine they will be kept on if we are in Division 4.

The junior teams of Bradford City are taught that it is the taking part that really counts, not the winning.

Now this is appalling, imo. Sport should be competitive at all levels, none of this fannying about because not all children can be successful, equal opportunities bollocks.

Yes they are children but if they intend to be sportsmen, they must be encouraged to want to win and thrive on success.

Then again, perhaps that just reflects the first team that we have at the moment.

The sad thing is - its not only City doing that Jumbo - you'll know yourself that at certain schools they've banned sports days for fear of people being competitive.......as a nation were hardly world beaters as it is at most sports - as soon as the generation of "non-competitive" young uns start coming through we'll be a laughing stock of world sport - if we aren't already!!
