I didn't realise Jimmy Speirs had a life-size statue and that it had been loaned to the Passchendaele museum. I know somebody taking part in a battle reenactment in July so I think I'll go along for a look.

Jimmy Speirs arrives in the Memorial Museum (20/02/2007)

This week James Hamilton 'Jimmy' Speirs arrived at the Memorial Museum. Jimmy Speirs was killed in action in August 1917 near Doch Farm. He was a famous Scottish international footballer. He played for Bradford City, where he scored the winning goal for the team during the finals of the FA Cup in 1911.

A life-sized figure of Jimmy, a framed photo of the team and some smaller objects were given on loan by Bantamspast.co.uk (Bradford City Football Museum) and Andrew Pickles to the Memorial Museum to be featured during our exhibitions from July to November this year in Zonnebeke and Passendale.

wasn't there some talk (in CG) of a statue being placed in bradford or was that just wishful thinking?

Aye, it's in the text of my post above.

I just spent a few days in the Somme, a few miles down the line from Ieper, with a Bradford historian who showed us the actual fields where the Bradford Pals were cut down in the space of a few minutes. It was a stunning and moving presentation from a bloke who really cares. I'd recommend going to the Somme with him to be shown the fields where the Bradford Pals fell. He gets emotional presenting the débacle and it's impossible not to be shocked by the enormity of it all.

He's not a City man though, he's from the other side of Town.

Read his book. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bringing-Uncle-Albert-Home-Soldiers/dp/07509420 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bringing-Uncle-Albert-Home-Soldiers/dp/0750942096/ref=sr_1_1/203-0993908-5605542?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1180034474&sr=1-1)96/ref=sr_1_1/203-0993908-5605542?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1180034474&sr=1-1 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bringing-Uncle-Albert-Home-Soldiers/dp/0750942096/ref=sr_1_1/203-0993908-5605542?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1180034474&sr=1-1)

But the book does not compare to his personalised presentation of the 16th and 18th West Yorkshire Regiments' battle site.

A true city great --
Became a full Scottish International and, whilst with Bradford City, captained his team to victory in the FA Cup Final of 1911, when he scored the winning goal.

i've actually been to ieper and it's hard not to feel the kind of emotion you talk about seeing all the names of people who gave their lives.

People are called Heroes and legends too easily these days. Jimmy Speirs was both
