RIP firstly to those who died or were injured :( ...buy its another reason why the WC shouldn't be allowed to be staged anywhere near the African continent IMO tdwn:

How long will FIFA be allowed to play political games that put the supporters of the beatiful game health, safety and indeed lives at risk? tdwn:

Thanks for that mate, must have slipped my mind:rolleyes:

Although "The African CONTINENT" should have given enough clues about my original worries;)

Parrot, that's like saying because of Hillsborough/Heysel (seeing as they are on my mind!) then the World Cup should be nowhere near the European Continent. If I remember rightly the year after Hillsborough the World Cup was held in Europe (Italia 90).

I see your point about potential problems but Euro has a point also that South Africa may well be different to Zambia. I do have my doubts that SA will get everything sorted in time but that's a different matter.

Yeah and my point is that the WC should be given to a Country with the best infrastructure already in place to hold the Worlds premier football event.

On another thread you rightly blame UEFA for holding the CL final in an inadequate arena (like they did at Heysel tdwn: ) but South Africa is just as under-prepared with the added ingredient of the Country been one of the most dangerous, crime ridden places in the World! ...Its all madness and all engineered to keep Sepp Blatter as president of FIFA which he achieved the other week!:(

Parrot, South Africa is a different country to Zambia and has hosted the Rugby and Cricket world cups, it has most of the stadiums and the infrastructure to host a world cup and I'm looking forward to going there for it.

Zambia

GDP (PPP) $10.59 billion (2005) (150th [1])
GDP growth 6.0% (2006)

South Africa

Just because they all look the same to you, doesnt mean they are actually the same.

Your view of Blatter is correct but this is how it works. There are around 200 member countries of FIFA and they all get one vote each so in order to get elected you have to appeal to everyone, not just a few european countries. The federations tend to vote together so the AFC will usually vote as a block so if you want to be president of FIFA and you want the african votes you have to appeal to their interests.
We're lucky that SA is getting it becuase at least its more or les the same timezone as us so we wont have to be watching matches on the telly early in the morning or in the middle of the night.

I agree.tup:

Naturally;)

Maybe I was wrong relating the events in Zambia to highlight my concerns about the WC in Africa.....but why have your wedding bash at VIPs when you could have it at the Ritz?

The foremost concern should be spectators health and safety, something FIFA and UEFA for that matter have a shocking disregard for IMO tdwn:

All right Parrot, but apart from both being in sub saharan africa, thats about all they have in common (the people being predominantly black.) The worlds 15th largest economy and the 150th dont have much else in common.

There are contingency plans if they are not ready, although they have'nt actually decided who will host if SA isn't ready. The stadiums and infrastructure will have to be passed by a FIFA inspection committee, who are pretty ruthless. I cannot think of a single death at a stadium in the history of the World Cup so I think the charge that FIFA dont care about health and safety of suppoprters is groundless. Your right about UEFA though, Heysel and the Athens stadium were not fit for purpose, obviously. Although again, apart from Heysel, I dont think anyone has died at a European Cup final and while Heysel was not a fit stadium, hooliganism was also a contributory factor.

i bet it will be a great success in South Africa and good luck to them. In the end of the day it's The WORLD Cup not who's got the best football league and grounds already in place. i have every confidence that a developed country such as SA who are at the forefront of many other sporting events, will get the right infrastructure in place. Lets hope a minority of knobheads travelling from various parts of 'civilised' Europe etc (us included) don't spoil it for everyone else.

Is there still an extemely high crime rate, particularly gun crime, in South Afica? :(

Skyebantam
5th June 2007, 09:02 PM
fair point Jumbo, i suspect they have crime like many of the developed world. the world cup went ok in the USA though, an example of a place with high gun crime and crime in general so i see no reason to expect anything worse in SA.

isnt the whole country shite and run by gangs like brazil? the capital has the worst or one of the worst gun crime records in the world?

It will be so great to watch all those poor sods been mugged, stabbed, shot, raped etc, the scum will see the wc as £££££££££££ in robbings etc

Im sure SA will have excellent stadia and facilities but my main concern is for the safety of the travelling supporters in such crime ridden areas :(

I know hundreds of South African families who have emigrated to NZ.They all have bad stories to tell of experiences sufferred by themselves and/or family/friends.There are thousands here and in Australia, because South Africa is simply not a safe place to live anymore. The above mentioned crime rate, is correct and the police in the big cities just cannot cope with the crime and violence. I would not choose to go to Sth Africa for any World Cup because my safety could not be guaranteed by the authorites.Cheers.

I saw the flavellas Adie, but didn't spend much time in them. The point is that many places, like Keighly and Peckham, have bad reputations, often deserved, sometimes overstated, but that doesn't put me off visiting them and you often find that they are not as bad as you expected.

Like Zimbabwe...I see SA as certainly "Improved" since it was given back to be run by its "own" people
