Very good news, he will be very good at this level. True he was an average player in a crap side, but someone who can play at Championship level will be a good player in league 2. Edds was total bab in the Championship and he's just signed a new deal with MK Dons.

We need a decent right back now, i think a backline of Heckingbottom, Wetherall, Bower and Gate would be one of the top 3 defences in the division.

I always liked Heckingbottom, a great signing! tup:

Hopefully the deal can be extended beyond that as well, we don't want the whole Taylor debacle happening again!

cast your minds back - Higgy was player of the season - granted in a poor team but he played well for Wednesday and would be a good addition to the team in this division. - IMHO

Great signing. I'm a bit wary of loan deals until January as they can disrupt momentum, but i can see this becoming a permanent move. Thankfully we wont have to put up with the over-rated scummer Parker this season and his pathetic tackling and distribution.

Sorry to dis agree - do not know much about Gate - but there is a distinct lack of pace in the defence which will be a little worrying after what went on last season.

That's the first signing that I'm really pleased about. Our defence should be really strong for this level.

Gate was very highly rated by the academy staff as he came through the ranks at NUFC and was in and around the first team squad at the same time Steven Taylor broke into the first team under Souness. Unfortunately for him Glen Roeder never fancied him. Regardless of whether it's the reserves or not to be the captain of a reserve side that has regularly featured so called first team players, he must have something about him.

I agree totally about the lack of pace, Bower and Wetherall would struggle to beat Albert Steptoe over 10 yards, so this is a bit of a worry.

Heckingbottom will be a good signing IF he's anything like the player he was in his last spell at the club tup:

Like everyone else though, it doesn't look a pacy defence by anyones standards!

Just need a new goalie now tup:

When was the last time we had any sort of pace in our back four though? The last one I can think of was Gus!

Exactly mate, and we've been like a sinking ship with a defence having more leaks than a Yorkshire Water mains pipe.

I was referring specifically to the defence....we still need a left winger, another central midfielder and a striker with pace IMO.

Although some of the triallists may be the answer? ;)

Yes Northern Doyle ? -- but just remind me where we have ended up - Div 2 is it not. Not all the defences fault - but a contributing factor. Our fullbacks have failed consistently to get forward to give us other attacking options and the number of times our defenders in the middle were caught out by the through ball behind them with an attacker using his pace to get on to it - happened to regularly for me last season. Unless you have the full back who has the pace to get back and get a tackle in to cover for this - our conceded column will be on the high side.

For me we will find our defence playing too deep again - inviting other teams to come on to us - deja vu?

Unless Mcall can find a midfield that will run its legs off to protect the defence / dominate the midfield area, provide the odd goal or two and supply the strikers - it will be like previous seasons - on paper any how.

Stuart hopefully will allay my fears when the season kicks off

Not good enough for the championship, say the Tykes but good for league 2.
