Great game today! I though Johnson silenced his critics today, with a battling performance in the middle and a very well taken goal! My only negative point today was that after taking the initial lead we sat back again and invited them onto us, putting us under pressure and leading to us conceeding!
A superb goal from Medley, I don't have a clue where it came from, he could have had a hatrick though! Very disappointed with Ainge, I thought he was very poor, dived in way to much. Conlon was poor too but apart from that we did really well and played some nice football!
Finally a win at Valley Parade, I couldn't be happier! :D

A performance from one extreme to another. At times we looked second best to a shite Wrexham team for the taking but after Carthorse Conlon went off City played some Champagne Football, the likes of which has been absent for years. Whilst not getting carried away (as if I would) If City could replicate the performance immediatley after Conlon's departure today AND find someone prolific enough to be a constant threat to the opposition's goal, then maybe a push for the play off's isn't a pipe dream. However....there was as much with today's performance to cause concern as there was to breed optimism.

Yep - great to see Ainge get a chance (he did okay i thought) and Phelan as well got a run out and seemed to have a lot of ability - defo one for this season.
Debut goal from Medley was unbelievable - up there with any other goals i have ever seen - seems up to the -physical side of the game as well - stats say 6ft 1 and over 13 stone at 18 years!
After the first half fizzled out i thought where do we go - but credit City for playing football and a bit unlucky not to get a couple more goals.
Credit to Wrexham as well for their approach play and never giving up.

.
Fingers crossed it doesn't become an Albatross to him like Forrest's Fluke against Walsall and cripple him with weight of expectation.
That said, on today's performance, he's worth a start against Barnet. Conlon may be many thing's but footballer isn't one of them.

I know what you mean about Forrest Chuck - I was going to mention his goal in my assesment of today but hesitated in case it rebounded on Medley going forward.
Conlon looked a bit ragged today - but again I reckon he needs that other forward player nearer him for maximum effect from his knockdowns - as Lino said today, with his back to goal Conlon looks the part lol.

Thought Ainge had a shocker, Harban must play next week. I thought the spirit of Kyle Nix was fantastic and at the end you'd have thought we'd won the world cup the way he was celebrated.
Fantastic finish by Medley who is very raw but used like today could be an assett with his power.
Honourable mentions also to Hecky, EJ and young Phelan when he came on.All showed the spirit Stuart is asking for

I thought Conlon worked hard but nothing went right for him. He didn't get a decent pass to his feet and neither omar or Nix got a decent cross in from the byline area.

Daley got 2 great crosses in near the end though where Medley could of scored twice!

Agreed, but earlier on they were only floating them in from 30 yards out but it was right to take him off as nothing was happening for him

main thing is you can see things getting better as the games go by - and we have more options which will be ideal later on.

Thats right, there are a lot of new players in the squad, lets give them time to see if they are good enough.
This was my first league match of the season (i saw 3 pre-seasons) but i could see an improvement in attitude and spirit amongst the team.

That was Stuart's post match criticism on the radio. But once again he talked a good game, definately builds everyone up which is such a refreshing change from the CT regime.

Yes it is still early days and some of the signs are looking good, passion, team spirit - some luck and and a couple more wins will hopefully see us kick on and the performances improve. Most of the team have something to work on. Thought the way there attack/forwards was set up - suited Bower and Wethers today. Ainge was thrown in and did well in the first half - but lost it a bit in the second - up to Wethers to calm him down - encourage him. Our defence again failed to deal with the threat - that the goal came from -something to be worked on.

great to read a mostly positive thread celebrating a win for a change. ok some players maybe were under par or played as well as they can which is still sht, but at least the TEAM won and that's what counts they all deserve some credit for that at least. as far as conlon is concerend i know our team isn't that polished and it's as likely he gets poor service as anyhting else so i wouldn't want to be too harsh after 3 league games.

Really enjoyed the game today. Thought we looked rather threatening throughout and our defense seemed very suspect in patches. I get really nervous when we're defending from set pieces too. We seem pretty vunerable from those.
Cracking goal to win the game for us too!

At last we won a game at home, I had forgotten what that felt like.
I thought as a team we played well today, not fantastic, but we played with spirit and determination. Medley goal, was out of the top drawer. Conlon looked tired all match I thought, and I would have replaced him earlier.
What we have to bear in mind here is that we are building a team, and we are bound to look ragged during that process. Stuart's match interview stated that he thought Wrexham were the better team in the second half, and I would agree, they passed it about and had us running to catch up. He also said fitness still wasn't right with a few players. What a refreshing change to have a match report that reflects what happened on the pitch.
I see loads of potential with this team. The confidence of this win, will start to impact on the team now they know they can win, and no doubt Stuart will build on that. jump:

Just shows ya Wellers!!!, just read your ratings and i thought Nix had a good game showing loads of fighting spirit and i admit he went quiet for 20 minutes after his booking.
I thought Matty Done gave Ainge a torrid afternoon and he was the weak link all day. Everything Wrexham did came down his side. Harban must play next week, not Ainge

Did you hear the Medley interview with Derm afterwards, the lad sounded really humble and surprised by all the attention but had a determination in his comments to repay Stuart for the faith he'd put in him

I think young Rix has loads of potential and under Stu can only get better. He was over enthusiastic today, putting in some ugly tackles, but he assisted both goals, but he needs time to learn.
Hecky was my man of the match, never put a foot wrong all afternoon.
I thought young Ainge did ok like alot of the team, needs developing, but should not be binned. his strength and determination made up for some lack of nouse, but this will come.

having written that before reading anyone else's opinions i thought they might cause a furore!
i think it's probably cos they were under my nose in the respective halves...
For the first half Ainge had him in his pocket and looked very good with strength and pace unfortunately Omar didn't want to link up with him and cut in all the time. Second half he was in the opposite corner of course and fell over and had a torrid time.
Nix's second half was weaker than his first but I was not impressed by his play as a winger - positionally I felt he was all over the shop. It'll be that for the 15 mins where we went to sleep he was disinterested right slap in front of me...
And yeah, of course there's no point playing someone out of position when there is a competent replacement in the squad :)
Jantje
26th August 2007, 04:10 PM
To be fair to you, i really don't know what is Nix's best position!!! I've now seen him play Left Wing, Deeper left MF, Central MF and as a supporting striker so he seems versatile if nothing else!!!
Maybe when Alex Rhodes is fit Nix might give way but he's handy to have as a squad player.

Quality goal from Medley, great strike! Ive only been to the other home game this season against Macclesfield and I was sick to death of Conlon from the off.
People say he's not getting the rub of the green but with a footballing side such as ours, we shouldnt be resorting to lumping it up front to him, hoping that someones going to get the flick on from him. Medley should at least start in his place, don't expect him to play the full 90 though.
