With the seemingly growing criticism of Donovan Ricketts, who was everybodys favourite keeper of recent times

In terms of sheer class and ability - Matt Clarke, could have gone on to international honours IMO.....
Reliability and consistancy - Gary Walsh......Henderson was in a similar mould but not as good!!
For happy, youthfull memories tho - gotta be Tommo!!......:)

Gary Walsh for me. I rated Schwarzer highly and remeber being at Charlton on his debut when he made some wonder saves in a 2-0 win, but he was only with us 3-4 months so i'll give it to Walshy for the fact that he was absolutely outstanding in our promotion season.

Ditto, Tommo for me too. The Tommo v Litchfield days were glory days.

Alan Combe was a great keeper while we had him on loan, but for me it's between Walsh and Clarke, with Walsh just pipping Clarke to the post!

Clarke was good but his 'want-a-way' mentality and big head spoiled him!!

Hendo is my favourite!

Walshy for me (oh and he hated being called that) remember the days when the chant "Walshy for England" could be heard round the ground... tup:

I did have a soft spot for Gould, Schwarzer and Hendo but Clarke for me was far too wantaway and arrogant..:D

Ended up ruining his career ultimately too!!

No doubt about it tho he was world class - i'd go as far as to say that he was as good as anything England have on offer at the moment.....seriously!!

Pity he didn't have the attitude to go with his talent.......Foster showed last season that you can still be world class and perform even when playing for a pretty **** team!!

I echo everything KB said about Matt Clarke he was quality and with the right attitude he could have left us for a big club, and had an international career,Schwartzer wasnt far behind at all

Clarke was a class act, so I voted for him.

I wasnt laughing either, the bloody idiot cost us the game. The following year was just as bad when we played Bristol City having made it to the 1/4 final again and we totally bottled it. They scored in about 2 minutes and we never looked like equalising. To make matters worse the City fans and Bristol fans were scrapping behind the old Bradford End before the game and a lad got stabbed.

Well not at the time no. Did cost us what would have been a semi final and a real achievement.

I've voted Gary Walsh. At his peak of his form here he was the best we had. Matt Clarke's greed and delusion's of granduer kept him from reaching a peak and becoming our greatest keeper ever.

I dunno why Tommo is held in such esteem, I think they are sugar coated memories. I think he was ordinary and I'm being kind at that. He spent two ****ing years on the transfer list ffs without a single tickle! Tommo did ok in a time where aside from now, we spent more time at the shitpool then ever before and spent a lot of time defending. He did alright and spent a long time here (not through choice though) but on a list of all time greats!!?? Do me a favour. He was no Zabica, but he wasn't a Schwarzer, Clarke or Walsh either!!

And when someone did offer to pay £100,000 he fooked off and started a wine shop .... Poor Chesterfield.

At the time of Tommo we had shite keeper after shite keeper so he was never up against anyone till Gavin Ward came along :D i think we had a run of good keepers up until the last couple of years :(

Thats why I and others said he was our "favourite" keeper or in other words the most popular.

In terms of ability he was nowhere near the likes of Walsh, Clarke and Schwarzer ect...

As you say, sugar coated memories, but they taste good tup:

Matt Clarke without a doubt.

Agree 100% Dave - it definately is "sugar coated memories" which made me and no doubt others vote Tommo!!
The poll wasn't who was the "best" City keeper - it was who was your "fave" City keeper and Tommo was/is held in high esteem by everyone who watched City in those dark days!!....

Just beat me to it KB, I could have put people like McManus , Downsborough, Liney etc who by anybodies standards were not the 'Best' keepers but it was meant to be a personal choice. I know someone who swears Ian Bowling was Citys best ever keeper ffs.

The vote is a bit unfair.....we can not compare all the keepers as we were at different levels of the shitpool throughoput these keepers tenure! I went for clarke he was the best technically and could have ben an england int if he had his head screwed on right!

Its meant to be an innocent poll about everyones favourite, it doesn't matter where we were at a certain time.

A couple of my faves are from the early 70's that older posters might remember, Aussie John Roberts and John Brough Ritchie. At that time we were where we are now but they made an impression on me just as much as Walshy and Schwarzer did in later years

I often wondered what the "B" stood for in John Ritchie's name Janteman. I'd have to say Downsbrough myself as he was a bit of a hero of mine as a lad.

I remember Downsborough had a decent penalty save record - Steve Smith was kicking about in goal for us around then as well (from Birm)

Pearce was a great keeper until he got injured (back?), Tommo was reliable and did all that was asked "Tommo Tommo Tommo" from the Kop.

I rated Nico Vasen (spelling?) a few years back when he was on a short term loan with us.

Fave keeper for me was Walshie - all round ability and just a great buy.
