It's quite well thought out, suggesting that Thorne and Topp could be a Mills and Blake. If Omar can frame himself, the writer claims he could be the equivalent of Beagrie.

We shall see how true that proves to be.

What right has anyone to suggest that any of the mottley crew that finished in the lowest position for 30 years can compare in any way with the promotion winning side of 1998/9.
If any of them are still playing for the club next time we get 87pts in the Championship then I will admit I was wrong.
The only comparison to be made is the players bequeathed to Rhodes when he joined the board and those he has now.

Talking about the promotion team, whatever happened to full back Stephen Wright? Did he go back to Jockland? He was a quality full back like Brian Mitchell but unlucky with injuries

He went to Dundee, then Scunthorpe, but never played much for them because of injuries.

A bit harsh on the writer as he is merely comparing popularity, not ability,
"Both were considered enigmas – talented but inconsistent. Their popularity was generaly low going into that memorable season; with most supporters fed up with Beagrie in particular after a disappointing first season. His popularity was a bit like Daley now."
Having said that, if Daley wins the fans around like Beags did it will be the mother of all achievements. We havent seen such abuse to one of our own since Summerbee was hounded out of VP.
The lads got a hell of a lot to do and while he has Colbeck & Brandon fighting for his prefered position he's likely to be used out of it and take all the **** for getting things wrong!

Beags had talent, he tracked back, putting good tackles in, scored some great goals, could put a mean cross in, and had good distribution - he knew where the target was.....Daley is fookin crap, his one and only attribute is pace, he's got absolutely nothing else in his locker, he's lazy, doesn't track back, can't tackle, can't cross, can't pass and is the worst finisher i've ever seen in 26 years of watching City!!.....
The comparison, however distant is absolutely laughable, its cheered my day up no end anyway....

Lee Mills signed only days before the start of the 1998/9 season and therefore his popularity could not be assessed. (Apart from a few who may have slagged him off purely because he had been signed from Port Vale.)
As for Beagrie he had spent the last few months of 1997/8 at Everton on loan and cannot be compared in anyway with Daley who is not fit to be mentioned in the same breath.

Your still missing the point of the comparison, any player who has shown great potential at any given time can be compared to Beagrie, until our promotion season Beags had a huge reputation for being lazy, uninterested and with a bad attitude. The ability was always there to see but for long periods until late in his career failed to materialise.
Obviously the class divide from Premiership(Beags) to L2(Daley) is there to see, and no-ones directly comparing the two for ability. But the attitude certainly can be compared and who's to say that Daley wont come good as Beags did at his respective level.

I'd say Omars more akin to Jamie Lawrence than Beagrie!
He's a very, very, very poor mans Lawrence, fast and pacey but unlike Jamie he has no end product.tdwn:
You could never call Jamie "lazy" either, in fact Omar could learn a lot from watching a few dvds of Mr Lawrence tup:

I think its not a comparison of skill, or even the players at all. The article is comparing the style of play and the type of player we had that won us promotion. A winger (Beags), a decent centre forward (Mills) and a tricky striker (Blake). Potentially we have a similar set up in Daley, Thorne and Topp. However, it all depends if they gel as well as Beags et al did in the promotion winning season, if we are going to emulate promotion this season.

He needs to come down and watch the performances on a thursday night at goals - then he'd feel better about himself!

I thought it was a decent write up really - no direct comparisons player against player - more the potential that exists with Thorne and Topp upfront and hopefully a vastly improved Daley getting stuck in and getting more goals.
