Sorry Jimmy but i havent made any predictions about players we will sign, John Spicer aside:wet:, when i suggest a player would fit the bill for us or is available or i like him, it doesnt mean i'v been texting Burt from the Butty stand at VP and and its a confirmed signing.
Nor with Colbeck do i expect him to sign for Lincoln this aft. My personal opion on the Colbeck situation is that he'll be sold sooner rather than later - it makes sense from a footballing and financial point of view for City from where i'm sat.
Stuarts top priority (or how it looked) this summer was to bring in a right midfielder, our main target was Thompson who turned us down, attention was quickly turned to Brandon and he was snapped up.
We already have Daley and Colbeck who operate there, 3 into 1 doesnt go and Colbeck hasnt the ability to get in anywhere else.!
Maybe my way of thinking is all wrong and if you've been speaking to Macca in the close season and he's told you his plans for Joe then i'd love for you to spill the beans????

For this same reason I believe Daley was signed up an a long term contract - So when Ince:rolleyes: comes knocking on the door, clubs will have to take into consideration contract length when bidding. Colbeck would command a fee by tribunaral if he decides to leave at the end of next season
I do think one of daley or colbeck may go at some point next season

I was just thinking about that when I was on the bog (nice). We've got potentially three right wingers if you count Brandon as one, and counting Brandon as also a midfielder, we've got three of them also (Brandon, Bullock and Mclaren) plus Nix who can also play in midfield. So depending on what formation Stu plays, we've got three players competing for 1 place.
To sell, financially Colebeck would be the best option revenue wise, but I think Omar is probably on more wages. Omar can play on the left, but its not his best position and Nix can play there also. If Stu buys another LM, then that would also leave 3 players competing for one spot.
4-4-2, 4-3-1-2, 4-4-1-1, either way there's still players missing out. Sell one of them to buy a keeper!

But we've also got versatile players.
Brandon can play left right centre midfield and also striker!
Daley has plaeyed everywhere for Jamaica except for in net, and he can play at club level anywhere in midfield, wing back position, and up front.
Colbeck can only play right, so thats the bad thing for Joe because he has a less chance out of all of them in getting in the team because he's only a direct winger (a good one mind) and unlike Brandon and Omar, he can only play in one position, he can't make an impact in another position because of his limited attributes (if you get me)
Nix can play centre and left but is more productive in the centre!

Nope - he's worth more to City as a player than as a transfre fee in my opinion.
Unless someone bids silly money for him. A few hundred k might change my mind, but for last season's player of the year and the only City winger to convince in that position... I'd sell Daley before Colbeck based on last season's performances and he'd probably command a larger fee than Joe.
I personally hope we don't sell anyone in the near future.

All personal opinions, i dont think Colbeck stands a cat in hells chance of starting ahead of Brandon on the right and Daley is our most likely starter on the left (untill we sign another - Colbeck's useless there anyway) so where does that leave him?
neversaydie
2nd July 2008, 04:46 PM
"so where does that leave him?"
Exactly where he was. It's only your opinion that Colbeck has no chance of starting on the right and while I would be dubious about playing Colbeck on the left, I would also be dubious about playing Daley there. With the number of midfielders we have now, it's hard to predict who will play where - but I think Colbeck has an important part to play this coming season and I will be surprised if I'm proved wrong in that.
You said that Colbeck is useless on the left - just out of interest, how many times have you seen Colbeck play there? And of those occasions when you did see Joe on the left: how many came after his upsurge in form following the loan deal which saw him play at Darlo last season?
I stand by my remarks that Colbeck should stay unless someone pays silly money for his transfer. I also stand by my point that based on last season's performances Colbeck should be ahead of Daley in the pecking order.
Re it makes sense from a footballing and financial point of view for City - We have little natural pace at this club and Daley and Colbeck are the obvious exceptions. Why would you sell one of them? How much would it cost an opposing team to buy Colbeck if you were in charge at City?

Actually, there was another interesting point you made: "untill we sign another" [i.e., left-winger]
I personally feel we are a bit light in the left winger department and expected to see City sign another - but the T&A seems to think we are just after another goalkeeper and striker.

Maybe Stuart will play 5 in midfield --
1 holding 2 providers and 2 out wide
With 3 at the back or 1 up front
1 up front worked for Spain with any 1 of the other 5 moving up when needed

I know, theres a few of us who think its a 'must of a signing' a true natural left footer would complete whats potentially our best midfield in years.
I still think we will tbh, i know the T&A's saying there will only be 2 more signings, but is that perminents?
We will still see trialists & Loanees coming in before august 9th and both Nix & Rhodes came in as trialists last year to play on the left.

Yeah, I hope the T&A are wrong and we do sign a 'proper' left-winger. I rate Nix as a player, but would feel more comfortable with a recognised left-winger in the first team squad as well as having Nix and the right-footed wingers.

I really can't see us signing another left winger. Everything points to either three possibly four signings.
A goalkeeper
A right back as cover (possibly Densmore)
The striker we've been after since day one
A second striker to make up for the fact we lost Medley since McCall named his target positions.
We have Daley, Brandon, Nix who can all play on the left, so I don't see it being a primary target for McCall.

And all bar Brandon were largely ineffective last season.
Daley's more miss than hit and Nix hasn't got the pace or trickery to play there succesfully.
If we bring in a decent left winger to balance the side and a decent keeper then i believe we will have the squad to win automatic promotion. tup:

The left flank has to be a worry given Heckers last season. OB needs more games imo - but behind a decent experieced left wide man who will support him. As you say a left sided player will give us a better balance and it will stretch the oppostion back line and leave more space for strikersa and otherl midfielders to make runs to get in behind.

The only way McCall will sign a left winger / midfielder, will be if one comes available and who would increase the quality of the squad. Then he has to get approval to sign him from the board.
A goalkeeper is a 100% must, a striker who can score goals or at least support Thorne is a high priority, and a reserve right back is fairly essential (though at least Ainge has some ability there - though he lacks the positional sense of a full back).
I would seriously, seriously doubt we will sign another left winger.

In an ideal world, with a bottomless pit of money and any player we want, yes, and a big yes.
But my honest answer is no. We've got plenty of players already in midfield, and like I say, if we get a new left midfielder, I'd want one who is going to be a first teamer and be better than anyone we've got. A right back will either be a loan signing or a young kid on a year long, very cheap deal.

McCall has said today he didn't sign Shaw because of the money. So what makes you think he's going to spend money on a left midfielder when we already have Daley, Brandon, Nix and Taylfroth who play there?
I've not said we don't need a left midfielder. I've just said with the resources we have, I don't think we'll sign one. I'm not deluded, I'm just living in the real world. If we can't go up because we have a good right sided midfielder playing on the left, then we're messed up generally. Chris Waddle played half his career on the right wing, and it never did him any harm.
And who would I play there? Either Brandon or Daley. Since Colbeck misses the first two games, let's see what happens with Colbeck. McCall has already says he likes Daley to play on the left and cut in.

The Shaw deal didnt go through because the fee was the equiv to a years wages.
And i'm sure all the rest of the squad could play at left mid if forced, but all (possibly bar Nix) would be out of their natural or prefered position - where's the sense in that?

Why spend money on a right back (where Ainge can play) when we haven't got a proper left midfielder in the squad?
We have those who can fill in but not in an effective way to balance out the side and make the difference between top ten and automatic promotion.
IMO a decent left sided player is needed just as urgently a keeper.

There are two separate questions here really.
1 - If I was City manager would I want a new left midfielder?
2 - If I was City manager would I be looking to sign a new left midfielder?
The answer to 1 is yes. I'd be looking at improving my team at any chance I had, and left midfield would be the second position, behind a striker. But McCall is suggesting that he isn't going to sign a new left midfielder; because
- He gave a list of new players he was looking to sign and they didn't include left midfield
- He has backed Daley and said he likes him to cut in on his right foot
- He has said Brandon can play anywhere in midfield, and some who know Brandon suggest he'll be on the left wing
He also has four players currently at his disposal for the left midfield spot. He only has one (Ainge at a push for two) for right back. If Arnison gets an injury, and he's already carrying one, then he's screwed in this position. In left midfield, although I thoroughly admit, none of the options are ideal, he has plenty of options.
But that goes round to point 1. We're a Division Four club, and one with the resources of a Division Four club. We can't afford to have players on our books who won't contribute. If we found a left midfielder we wanted, then I'd personally get rid of one current player. The two options are Colbeck and Daley. I like them both, but I'd opt for Daley because he's more saleable, infuriating especially at our level, and not exactly the biggest fans' favourite. Colbeck has youth and plenty of the crowd on his side, and really ought to be the future of the club.
I thoroughly agree a left midfielder is a position we should be looking at improving in. But I see this more a long term goal. Do I think we'll sign a new left midfielder / winger, before the start of the season? No. And I reckon there's less than a 10% chance we will.

Can't make up my mind about boulding. Obviously had a good season last year in a struggling team, but could he be a one-hit-wonder? Worth a gamble I guess; though I would prefer proven record of Beckett.
Hope he proves me wrong if your http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:IImtwV9cuStqPM:http://www.english-shop.de/images/HP%2520-%2520HP%2520Sauce.jpg (http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.english-shop.de/images/HP%2520-%2520HP%2520Sauce.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.english-shop.de/kelloggsricekrispiemallowbar28g-p-2434.html&h=325&w=325&sz=43&hl=en&start=1&tbnid=IImtwV9cuStqPM:&tbnh=118&tbnw=118&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dhp%2Bsauce%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den%26rlz% 3D1T4GGIH_en-GBGB229GB230) is right !

I think its more of getting the right type of player in to be the perfect partner for Thorne, rather than another goalscorer.
Beckett would be good cover for Thorne more than a partner IMO....although i'd like them both! :flame:

Fair point. Personally I think WT would be a good partner for thorne anyway; more options in the ST position would always be welcome ! Although the purse strings may disagree.
