Just to remind you we had just had our most successful season since the early 1920's when Wetherall signed.
Since then our position in the league has gone as follows (out of 92)
17th, 20th (R), 35th, 39th, 43rd (R), 55th, 55th, 66th (R) and last season 78th.
We have played 398 league games won 112 drawn 104 and lost 182 scored 451 goals and let in 593.
There is not another team out of 92 that has such a pathetic record and probably not another player in the history of the league that can have survived such mediocrity.

Of course it was but all the others got routed out - Wetherall just happened to be captain and supposedly the "motivator" whilst we were dropping through the leagues.

Yep. Wetherall played on his own, against entire teams and results are entirely down to him.
He was custodian of the club's finances, near bankruptcy, administration, team budget, recruitment policy, manager choice and team selection and tactics for all those years.
And that's not a comment against you BBB. It's against the original premise by BWWB.

By the way
I really don't like posts about worst players and stuff. I don't see any advantages in it but only discouragement and heartache for players or ex-players tuning in here.
WE all read this stuff and can you possibly imagine footballers not checking out the relevant websites?
Much better to see positives put on here.

So nothing to do with Wetherall not being good enough then??
Rhodes is totally reponsible for most of your points (ably assisted by Richmond) but falling out with Gibb was his masterstroke.
Wetherall was, however, manager during the disastrous second half of the 2006/7 season managing to make an average team absolutely crap.

I tend to agree with you on this but City fans have been badly let down over the last 10 years by successive directors, managers and players.
Bradford is bigger (in population) than Manchester, Liverpool and virtually all towns represented in the Premiership and Championship (bar London, Birmingham and Sheffield) (except of course L**ds) yet we're expected to settle for being a small club in the lower divisions.

Just to remind you that the first season out of that list WAS our best since since the 1920s. And the principle reason was Wetherall's form, being ever-present, a motivator, experienced head and above all scoring the goal that kept us up.

You know this is an interesting argument. Looking at cities in the UK and their populations, then it does question why we've been so crap for so long. Perhaps its something to do with past fame and fortune?
As BWWB said, Bradford has a larger population than Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle etc (in fact its the 6th largest city in the UK), but these towns have a much better reputation and pedigree for football in many peoples eyes. Bradfords population was still up there in the 60's - yet we were never a Manchester Utd or Newcastle Utd (we were relegated to division 4 in 1961 and finished second bottom in 62-63). In fact, the top teams during those years were Ipswich, Bolton, Burnley and Sheff Wednesday.
The problem is that these days there is such competition for players, and with such large catchment areas, most young pro's or players wanting to make it in the game, choose to play for a "massive club" with a big reputation (a reputation often formed 40 years ago). So my question is, not what we were doing post Premiership - but pre Premiership. Why weren't we any good, a force to be recognised, 40 years ago...therefore building us into a "massive club" today?

Interestingly enough City were the 4th best supported team in 1908/9 behind Newcastle, Chelsea and Everton averaging 3700 more than Manchester United.
This was their first season in Division 1 but also the first season that Bradford Park Avenue had joined the league.
By 1980/1 City were averaging 2858 (without having to compete with Avenue) but due mainly to the efforts of Hegginbotham, Tordoff and more notably Richmond had reached the Premiership 20 years later.
Whilst financially knackered they were not alone in this as how many top clubs are financially viable and compared to Hull and Middlesbrough (a few years earlier) should have been able to cope.
It may not have been realistic to stay in the Premiership too long in the first spell but regrouping after relegation should have meant consolidation in the Championship. As a top Championship side we would average 16-17000 paying full price without the need for BOGOF's.
Unfortunately, as I said before, we have all been let down in the past 10 years and I only hope that the present crop of players (at least being led by someone who accepted nothing but success as a player) can start to repair the damage.

I'd bet any talent that does crop up around the city tends to get siphoned off by the Leeds scouts anyway. Another reason I hate the fact so many Bradford kids support Leeds.

Ricketts isn't the worse keeper at all, forgetting Howarth here?

We also had Davison who was a real howler. Interestingly, other keepers who turned out bad for us - Turnbull and Myhill, are both now Premiership keepers, with Myhill playing for Wales, and Turnbull touted as a future England stopper.

Leftback, Armstrong, was on loan for a bit back in league 1 under the Todder. ****.
Despite many comments about Ricketts, I can't agree he was our worst keeper in recent times. Although frustrating and not very brave he was capable of some world class shot stopping at times.

Too f...ing right...its an absolute joke that he has been even mentioned in this thread considering some of the aoslute shambles we have had between the sticks...esepcially Howarth...who is so bad he had to become a paramedic at the age of like 24 or wahtever!!!!!!!!
