View Full Version : Liverpool: Genuine Contenders?

After watching Liverpool tonight on MOTD, it reminded me of the Liverpool side of the 1980's. Not playing particularly well but managing to find a victory. They've had their fair share of luck too. Coming back early in the season to not just draw with Boro but undeservedly beat them! An excellent win against Chelsea recently too. They seem to have luck on their side this season. Can Liverpool do it?

Everyone seems to be taking the view that they're playing badly and winning, so what will happen when they start playing well. I'm wondering what will happen when they run out of luck. They seemed to need twenty odd shots to score, a liberty they will not be allowed in many premier league matches.
Ultimatley i think they will challenge until towards the end but come up short, however i think that is enough for the fans for now

I'd like to think so. Without Torres for the last few games and still beating the likes of Chelsea. The strength of their bench says it all at the moment too... Andrea Dossena, Daniel Agger, Robbie Keane, Albert Riera, Yossi Benayoun & Javier Mascherano last night.

They'll finish 4th - AGAIN....
Yep, they have quality but they still don't look or feel like a team capable of challenging again....its still the defence for me that has nowhere near the quality of Man Yoo or Chelsea!!

Gerrard is seriously better than Fabregas, they are both top players, Fabregas has age on his side but stevie G has that much more in his locker!!

Although they have improved they still haven't got the quality of Chelsea or Man Utd, obviously they can beat these teams on their day but not over a gruelling season IMO.
I think they will finish 3rd and close the gap points wise on the two teams mentioned above while Villa and Arsenal will battle it out for 4th place.
Doesn't take much for the boards closet Liverpool "fans" to get moist, does it?

Debatable this one. Gearrad is all action with an eye for goal, but can he pick a pass like Ces??? I don't know. Would be amazing to see them in the same team complimenting each other

I thought Liverpools problem has always been not competing in the games against the other members of the top 4?
The difference this year to previous seasons under Rafa has been that of a decent start and the ability to compete/beat their main rivals. Historically under Rafa Liverpool come good in the second half of the season, i see no reason why they wont continue to improve over the season like normal & having beat Manure & Chelsea already WITHOUT arguably their best player, surely its Liverpool who are the team to catch?
Having said that, like always with Liverpool the fitness to Gerrard & Carragher are imperative!!

Stevie G is top drawer, up there with the very best in the world and one of the best England have produced - but if Fabregas was English i'd have him in the England team over Gerrard, one of the problems with the balance of the England team is that you have probably 6/7 players who always fancy their chances of scoring - Fabregas knows his place and would rather pick the unselfish pass over glory - he still weighs in with his fair share mind!

Last season Liverpool ended up 11 points off the top, having taken just 4 points from a possible 18 from the other 'top 4' teams. Already they have taken 6 from the opening two games.
Agreed they need not get complacent with the smaller clubs, but these are the fixtures that sort the wheat from the chaff at the top!!

That's what I'm talking about...the game yesterday and the game against Boro are 2 games that in the last few seasons Liverpool would have probably only taken 1 or 2 points out of. They seem to have the "luck/look" of champions! :D

Why cos there is only one 'ARRY REDKNAPP!!!!!!
One week ago they had 2 points and were on their arses..
'Arry has turned em around and since he took over he has won 2 and drawn a game against a gooners side who were also miles better on the night..
Liverpools luck couldnt last and tonight someone else got the rub of the green..
Too many dodgy sendings off and last minute freaky ref decisions in the dying minutes have clouded over their last few wins..
Third or fourth yep but title contenders this year.. Nope..
Maybe next year..
Well done 'Arry!!!!!!

Liverpool still top without Torres and I've just seen on BlueSQ they're 9-2 for the title! With Torres back soon then that's worth a bet I reckon! Can't believe the side sat at the top are only the third favourites for the title. I might just put £20 on it. (Alright £5)

They haven't won since Rafa had his rant at Fergie, in the mean time Man Utd move 2 points clear at the top with a game in hand! I can't see Man Utd slipping up now but can't see Liverpool dropping many points either, so think they'll probably retain the title at Old Trafford against Arsenal in May (as they won the title at Old Trafford a few years ago).
