View Full Version : Eating game meat

November and December are THE months of the year for eating game.
Predictably, the country I know best is Belgium and I intend to try a gastronomic weekend at this place. http://www.roannay.com/ virtually overlooking the Spa Francorchamps Grand Prix track. There's not much of the site in English unfortunately but the restaurant et cave section translates the menu. There's all sorts of pheasants, partridges, deer, wild boar and hare with local specialities. I notice rouget (red mullet) on the menu too. It remains to be seen if it tastes as good as it sounds. The meals alone look expensive but the gastronomic weekend formulae look reasonable.
Another thing about game meat is that it is quite a healthy alternative to fattier more traditional options like lamb and pork. Nothing compares to well prepared prime pieces of venison medallions or wild boar ribs.
Across the border in Germany I think the game season extends to the end of February. I ate fantastic stuff in Monschau last February. Monschau is a beautiful small town on a fast flowing stream in the German hills just over the border from Francorchamps, not far from Aachen.
Worth considering for a week away from it all or a long weekend?
It's something I grew into since coming to live over here. I used to think that food was just a fuel to fill up the belly when it was empty. I now believe it should be something to enjoy and hopefully not be too unhealthy. I could never go back to McDodo's any more for their greyburgers and tasteless bread buns.
PS: there's no horse meat on the card though.

St. Peter: "Name?"
GB: "Prawnking to some, Nosferatu to others, you can call me Mark"
St. Peter: "oh.. THE Prawnking?.. the pot-smoking, lettuce-eating, chauvinistic purveyor of porn?"
GB: "That's me!"
St. Peter: "What the **** do YOU want?"
GB: "I wanna come in"
St. Peter: "Have you got a copy of 'Debbie does Doncaster?"
GB: "Right here in my macintosh pocket"
St. Peter: "ENTER!!"

.. and God did create the heaven and the earth; and the beast of the field; and the pepper sauce;... he sayeth unto Adam.. "go forth, drink of the goat, devour the flesh of the lamb and the cow, and dost thy knowest that the rib-eye is the most flavoursome"
"Behold!.. I sayest unto thee do not eat rabbit jock!.. for thou will become devoid of flesh and hair and babble incoherently"

I ate enough cuddly animals over last weekend to be definitely spared an after-life of 72 Anne Widdecombes.
Hostellerie du Roannay in Francorchamps is recommended for a gastronomic weekend and long walks to build up more appetite and thirst for the next binge.

I don't mind venison just fried, but it only ever seems to get served in blood thickened sauce (Jugged venison I guess - Hirschpfeffer over here) which is just too rich for my taste.
Rabbit is lovely (except for having to spit out lead shot every other bite if I buy from the pub :))
