It wasn't a bad match, a bit scrappy but with one side having not much to play for and the other being nervous about the playoffs that was to be expected. We were excellent defensively throughout the game, though Emanuel looked a bit shaky at right back (where was Swift? Injured?) and Ricketts was superb. The midfield was fairly poor...Bentham broke up play well but gives us nothing going forward, Bridge-Wilkinson had an off day, Colbeck played fairly well, causing Heckingbottom a few problems and Petta was dreadful. He was lazy and wasted possession regularly, and missed the best chance of the game - deserved to be taken off, and the fact that he was hauled off relatively early for Todd makes me think (or hope?) that he's lost patience totally with him. The strikers weren't great, but had very little service. Cadamarteri and Windass do not play together well though, and Cads still can't shoot properly. Out of the subs, Brown tried hard but didn't get much luck or service, Schumacher did fairly well and Muirhead had barely any time to make an impact. Not impressed with the scenes after the game, the police allowed the Barnsley fans to get right up to the away end, and apparently there was some racist chanting and coins thrown from them.

Every Bradford City fan conducted themselve's superbly today under provocation from the dim witted Miner's.The City fan's just took the piss out of them. The fan's never stopped singing during the second half and if i was a Barnsley fan i would have been embarrassed at the vocal support. They are fighting to get in the play-off's and their fan's never got behind their team.

Here's one I prepared earlier :) :

Rushed start to this one, we spent too long in the pub before hand and we managed to get into Leeds late, thus having to wait for 30 mins to get the Barnsley train. Pulling up in Barnsley at about 2.55pm and then jogging up to the ground, we just about made it for kick off.

Surprised at the number of Bradford fans there, fair effort considering we were underdogs for the match and we had bugger all to play for. The sun was shining and most of us were in good spirits though, so the opening exchanges were quite good.

Also surprised at the number of Barnsley fans there as well, everything to play for in a massive game for them, yet still there must have only been under 10,000 there? Very strange. Very quiet too, considering the support the team needed.

It was pretty clear that Barnsley were gonna dominate, but despite that they seemed woeful at finishing chances. They had three clear cut chances I thought, two of them being offside and the third being a good save from Ricketts. The rest I felt the defence dealt with pretty comfortably actually, and I was never at the point where I thought we were going to throw the game away.

I was disappointed by the lack of enterprise we showed up front though. Whenever our defence reclaimed the ball it was being pumped up front and was coming straight back at us. I thought our midfield was poor for most of the match, although Schuey did strengthen it slightly when he came on. For the most part we looked clueless, however. Petta and Colbeck had the chances to run at the defence and cause problems, but they rarely did and when they did there was often noone in the middle. We can’t play Cadders and Windass up front together, they are too much like one another, both lacking pace and both coming deep to try and create things. Ideally we need someone who could run off Windass or Cadders to create space for them, something to look for in the pre-season? Or why not even try someone like Sanasy?

We had a few more breaks in the second half down the wings when Barnsley were stretched and I thought we did well, Petta should have stuck his chance away, and in retrospect with the Bower header onto the bar we could have easily nicked it, so it’s a bit gutting in that respect.

Great atmosphere in the City end towards the end of the match, even though we were getting bossed and we were only playing for pride. Pity the same couldn’t be said for the Barnsley fans. Didn’t seem like a Yorkshire derby, although we did have the typical niggly Yorkshire derby referee who seemed to give a lot of unnecessary free kicks out.

As for events after the final whistle, well. The riot police in full gear were hardly helpful. They took their station right next to the City supporters, and you could feel the whole atmosphere change. Before their appearance I doubt much would have happened after full time, but their presence seemed to tempt a few into trouble. Barnsley chavs streaming onto the pitch and right away running over to the City fans, nice job Barnsley stewards. The two crowds met and there were coins and snooker balls being chucked into the City crowd, our chavs were going ballistic and racism reared its ugly head again from the gathered Barnsley supporters. No intervention from stewards or the police of course, top job again fellas.

After a brief standoff we decided to get out and to the train station, walking past our brave boys in blue, in full riot gear, man-handling kids and old age pensioners, only to be greeted by people saying we were suicide bombers, etc. Highlight of the day though was a 50 year old scuffpot with the world’s dodgiest barnet coming over and saying, ‘Ha ha, are you a suicide bomber?’ to which my mate replied, ‘If I had that mullet I would commit suicide.’ His face was quality.

In the train station we were confronted by more Barnsley hoolies, as well as police pushing us onto the train using what some might describe as unnecessary force. On the City fans part, there were a few chavs there, a lot of chanting too, and had the police not intervened, it might have got ugly. But using truncheons to push people back – really necessary?
