Great choice! It was only every going to be JT or Gerrard! Personally I think a centre back makes the perfect captain, as they can see everything what's going on in front of them and are more involved in the game than a keeper!

i would personally have prefered gerrard as from watching the england games he seems to shout more encouragement towrads the players than terry, who only seems to open his gob if calling for a ball

Wrong choice. Gerrard would have been a far better choice. A captain should be able to lift a team through his own performace as Gerrard did with Liverpool in the Champions League and FA cup final. Terry hasn't nor will ever do this. Yes he will do a good job but Gerrard would have done better IMO.

I agree, BAP. Gerrard for me was and still is the ideal captain. terry is a good leader and a great defender but I would have preferred Gerrard's motivational skills. Look at how he carried Liverpool across the line running through treacle against West Ham in the Cup Final - sheer class from a quality skipper..

So how many times did arguably England's greatest captain & only World Cup winner Bobby Moore "change a game"? ...Personally I think the right choice as been made, JT seems to have a more "out-going" personality & better communication skills than Stevie G IMOtup:

I agree too, stevie g as england captain and we would be immense...
actually, no...i'm forgeting were gonna have mcclaren as boss who would probably try and play him in goal...or somethingtdwn:
Still, a good choice in terry and we can all thank our lucky stars he didn't pick neville:rolleyes:

Gerrard is the type of captain that "plays by example" rather than lead that way - Terry would rip his heart out and eat it, if it meant us winning - the guy was born to be captain, he's an absolute monster and IMO after Cannavaro is the greatest centre half in world football...
A centre back can read the game better, and defenders always make better captains - after Beckham, we needed a passionate captain, who'll shout his lungs out, pump his chest out and be in the thick of things when you need him to be - for all Gerrard would have made an excellent captain - Terrys the better option!!...Well done Mr McClaren, 1st decision made is the correct one, lets hope its a sign of things to come.....

I wonder if we really need to have a permanent captain, why not pick one on a match by match basis. The problem is that they cant be dropped, as happened with Beckham, even when they should not be automatically selected.

The first of what will be a list of errors by McLaren. You either pick your best player or inspired leader as captain. Gerrard is both. Terry has too many players of similar ability vying for his place. Gerrard is untouchable. This decision is proof, if needed, what a numpty we have given the England job too.

Good to see the sun aint affected your numpty powers mate....tup:
I thought you were gonna give McClaren a fair crack of the whip?
The decision was the correct one - there aint a centre back in the world (Cannavaro apart) who could knock Terry out of the team - so i don't know who you think is capable in this country....
Whilst i would have been happy with Stevie G being captain, and yep he's our best player, with the amount of injurys he suffers it would have been a waste of time making him captain!!
Take them fookin Chelsea hating blinkers off mate - your making yourself look stupid, if Terry played for anyone else you would have agreed with the decision!! He's in the Tony Adams/Terry Butcher mould - players who you no doubt loved as captain......headtap:

Only a complete coont with no idea about footy would think Terry more suitable than Gerrard for the job, which says a lot about our fooking new manager. Terry is a good choice, but not the correct onetdwn:

I like Liverpool and watch them 'live' when I can. I think Stevie Gerrard is a great player and I rate him higher than Lampard. Personally I've always thought John Terry was over-rated. I also think John Terry had a poor World Cup.
Do I have a problem with John Terry being made captain of England? No.

I think McClaren has started his England managerial careeer as he means to go on - he is in charge and has been brave in dropping Beckham....we should never get to the point where players think they are guaranteed to start because of who they are!! tup:
