Ken did buy them for a quid, but he also bought the massive debt responsibility they had at the time as well. He was very lucky when Red Rom came along looking for an English team. Bates investments in Chelsea Village and other Chelsea projects, players, etc. had been an absolutle disaster. Red Rom is one of the few people on the planet with enough dosh to turn things around.
The fact that he is Russian and the giant population of that country has given Chelsea a great push amongst future consumers in that part of the world. If Chelsea continue, their brand mark could become just as big as Real Madrid and Manchester Utd's. This is something Bates would never have been able to achieve and is one of the big reasons Chelsea might actually turn out to be a good investment for Rom.
The great thing about Bates at the moment is that he isn't doing much to promote the L***s brand, in fact I 'd say he was harming it :D

Didn't Richmond also buy Bradford for a quid? And didn't it turn out to be a great investment for him personally, sorry for his wife?:(
